New Freightliner Powertrain Feature

Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) has introduced the availability of the Vehicle Acceleration Rate Management System (VARMS) and Load-Based Shift Scheduling (LBSS). Both systems have been fully tested and validated, proving that when combined they achieve a more than 8-percent increase in fuel economy, the company says. Working with engine manufacturer Cummins, testing included the development and validation of the VARMS. This optimized programming system, implemented for use with the Allison 1000/2000 series transmission, includes a means for programming the vehicle’s acceleration rate and has been carefully integrated with the chassis powertrain components.

Peterbilt offers aero, fuel and interior improvements
Peterbilt has introduced its Aerodynamic Package for its on-highway Models 386 and 384, as well as a Fuel-Efficiency Package for its traditionally styled Models 388 and 389. Both packages are designed to reduce vehicle drag by up to 24 percent and to provide fuel savings gains of up to 12 percent, resulting in an estimated $5,600 in savings annually versus comparable models without the package.

The Aerodynamic Package includes: roof fairing and trim tabs, new sleeper roof transition, enhanced chassis fairings, aero battery box/toolbox, composite sun visor, sleeper extender, and aerodynamic mirrors. The Aerodynamic Package will also be available from Paccar Parts for Model 386 and 384 retrofit.

The Fuel-Efficiency Package includes aerodynamic mirrors, sleeper extender, roof fairing and trim tabs, composite sun visor and a sleeper roof transition. It complements the standard features engineered into the Models 388 and 389, such as the redesigned hoods, headlamps, hood ornament and crown and grille. It will also be available from Paccar Parts for Models 388 and 389, as well as earlier Models 378 and 379.

Peterbilt also is introducing interior enhancements for on-highway and vocational trucks that include a more efficient air conditioning system and more durable and attractive dash material. The new designs are included on all three interior levels for Models 386, 384, 389, 388, 367 and 365.

Reman Brake Shoes
ArvinMeritor introduced its new lineup of remanufactured brake shoes with PlatinumShield coating, which the company says provides industry-leading protection against corrosion and rust jacking. ArvinMeritor is offering the reman shoes with the new technology at no additional cost over its previous reman product, and it includes a threefold increase in warranty protection against rust jacking, three years or 300,000 miles. According to the company, the PlatinumShield coating was developed to resist micro-abrasion caused by the movement of the brake lining against the shoe table during normal use. Rust jacking occurs when rust forms on bare shoe metal under the lining, which causes the lining to lift and crack.

Spring brakes
Inline spring brakes feature several high-quality components to make them much less susceptible to premature failure, the company says. Each Inline spring brake includes epoxy-coated steel power springs to help ensure a long-lasting tension that’s highly resistant to corrosion from road salts, chemicals and other contaminants. A chrome-plated internal push rod is polished to help it move easily through the center seal, which helps prevent internal leaks and premature chamber wear.

Toyo Tire U.S.A. has rolled out two new sizes – 265/75R22.5 and 245/75R22.5, both in load range G – of its M154 ultra-premium, regional highway commercial tire. The M154 incorporates proprietary e-balance design technology, which improves both endurance and resistance to irregular wear, the company says. Two other new tires include the M143, an all-position low-pro radial designed using Toyo’s DS0CII computer technology, and the M608Z, a premium drive axle tire with an extra-wide block and lug pattern for reliable service when road conditions provide an extra challenge. The M143 includes a special “belt-defender” compound to increase durability and casing life by fighting heat and stress.
