Since the introduction of the iPhone Trucker app earlier this year, more trucking-related endeavors have entered the area where mobile communications technology and business intersect. The latest iPhone app is Trucker1, what developer 1st Guard Corporation is calling “the first mobile application developed specifically for owner-operators,” now available via the iTunes App Store. And, significantly, it’s free. 1st Guard is a leading provider of physical damage and non-trucking-use liability insurance to owner-operators and small fleets, and verified Trucker1 users will, as of January 1, 2010, receive “a 10 percent insurance discount,” the company said in a press release.

The Trucker1 app includes tools unique to 1st Guard customers like an instant insurance verification protocol, eliminating the need to carry insurance ID cards, and a simple claims submissions process, but at the same time “anyone can download Trucker1 and use the free tools for transmitting route and location details to the e-mail and Facebook accounts of friends and family members,” the company said in a press release.

“We used the full gambit of technologies,” added company CEO Daniel Riber — “GPS, reverse geo-coding, social-networking, geo-stamping images, web services and more to define what an app like this should be” says Ribar. Benefits for business owners include lower processing and customer-service costs.
