New owner, still a winner

Under its former owner, Baker’s Peterbilt was featured on the cover of Overdrive.

Wayne Baker’s path to the show truck circuit started with a head-on collision that left Baker bruised and his 1998 Peterbilt 379 totaled. The driver of the four-wheeler survived.

After the wreck, Baker decided to make a bold request of Jeff England, president and CEO of Pride Transport. They had met when Baker was a Pride company driver.

“I said I wanted to buy his gray truck,” Baker recalls. England’s 2002 Peterbilt 379 had won Best of Show Combination at the 2004 Pride & Polish and graced the cover of the November 2004 Overdrive.

“He didn’t want to sell it to just anybody,” Baker says. England finally relented, realizing that Baker would care for it.

That he did. Baker replaced fenders that had been damaged after the show and overhauled the engine. He kept the paint job, with low-key graphics on the fenders.

Not fixing what wasn’t broken paid off at the 2005 Pride & Polish. The truck won First in 2000 and Newer Combination, and Second in Engine.
