ATA NAMES NATIONAL DRIVER OF THE YEAR
Charles Brown was named the American Trucking Association’s 2004 National Truck Driver of the Year. Brown drives for Yellow Transportation and has logged more than 3 million miles without a preventable accident. He has driven for 36 years.

Criteria for the honor included safety, driver education, civic activities and contributions to the company’s operating efficiency.

Brown received the ATA Professional Excellence Award in 2002. He served on America’s Road Team, an ATA-sponsored industry public relations program, in 1973.


BARR-NUNN EARNS SAFETY AWARD
The Iowa Motor Trucking Association awarded Barr-Nunn its 2004 Great West Safety Award. The award is based on miles driven in Iowa and accident rates.

Barr-Nunn Transportation also announced that it has signed C.W. McCall as its marketing personality for 2004-2005. McCall wrote and performed the 1976 hit song “Convoy.”
Barr-Nunn fleet manager Paul Olsen was named 2004 Dispatcher of the Year.


DRIVER WINS NEW ATV
Anderson Trucking Service awarded Donny Snow of Gilbertsville, Ky., a 2004 Arctic Cat ATV in its recruiting giveaway.

ATS also gave away more than 50 gift certificates for products and services at Truck World in Hubbard, Ohio, during Driver Appreciation Days.


AVERITT EXPRESS HOLDS SAFETY COMPETITION
Brent Hawks of Asheville, N.C., was the grand champion of the driving competition held by Averitt Express at its nationwide 2004 Truck Driving and Dock Safety Championships at its Cookeville, Tenn., service center.

Charles Walker of Louisville, Ky., won second place, and Dale Myers of Knoxville, Tenn., won third place.

The grand champion of the dock competition, for the second year in a row, was Kevin Shoemaker of Greenville, S.C. Second place went to Mike Webb of Knoxville, Tenn., and third place was awarded to Pete Hand of Jackson, Tenn.


CON-WAY NAMED TO magazine’s TOP TECH LIST
For the second consecutive year, Con-Way Transportation Services was ranked by InformationWeek as one of the top 500 companies in the country for its innovative use of information technology.

CONTRACT FREIGHTERS INC. named its Drivers of the Month for August. Richard Norman of Lancaster, Texas, was named Company Driver of the Month. Carl and Rebecca Holt of Laredo, Texas, were named Company Team of the Month.

Michael Yarbro of Lawton, Okla., was named Contractor Driver of the Month. David and Terri Thresher of Carl Junction, Miss., were named Contractor Team of the Month.

CHRISTENSON TRANSPORTATION recognized two drivers for reaching 1 million miles: Ed Dowdy of Malakoff, Texas, and owner-operator Bill Colgrove of Vichy, Mo.

Secesvester “Sly” Johnson is the MELTON TRUCK LINES Driver of the Month for August. He started as a company driver with Melton in 1992 and purchased his first tractor in 1999.
