CARRIERS RAISE DRIVER COMPENSATION
In May, Barr-Nunn Transportation began paying owner-operators a $750 appreciation bonus after every 60,000 paid miles. This bonus is an increase from $600.

KLLM Transport Services’ new starting pay package has company drivers earning 34 cents per mile, and company teams 51 cents per mile. Owner-operators can earn 92 cents per mile, plus paid reefer fuel.

TMC Transportation raised pay for experienced drivers from 40 cents per mile to 44 cents.


SUMMITT PRESENTS CASH PRIZE
Summitt Trucking awarded Bob Barrom $15,000 as part of a companywide contest based on safety and dependability.


VITRAN TO EXPAND HEADQUARTERS
Vitran Express is expanding its Indianapolis headquarters, investing more than $25 million to upgrade its fleet, computers and facility. The project will accommodate growing human resources, finance and administrative operations. The company is adding 33 jobs.


PENNSYLVANIA CARRIER MARKS CENTURY
West Motor Freight, which began hauling freight on horse-drawn wagons in 1907, is celebrating its 100th year of business. A division of The Evans Network of Companies, West Motor now operates a large fleet of tractors in the eastern United States.

Phillip Jesse West founded West Motor in West Chester, Pa. He eventually expanded to the Pottstown and Boyertown regions in Pennsylvania.

West’s son, Winfield, purchased the company’s first two trucks in 1930, expanding service to the West Coast. Evans Network purchased the company in the late 1980s, refocusing its service to regional hauls.


CRST BUILDING NEW TRAINING CENTER
CRST International is building a $2.5 million training and lodging center at its corporate complex in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The three-level facility will encompass 36,000 square feet. CRST hosts up to 75 potential drivers every week for orientation and driver training. The center will feature a driver simulator that enables new drivers to experience over-the-road, behind-the-wheel driving conditions.

It also will offer a recreation room.
