Nikirk wins Truckers News photo contest

View of Colorado River canyons from U.S. 89 by Ron Nikirk.

Gordon Trucking company driver Ron Nikirk, based in Oregon, is the winner of Truckers News’ November photo contest, hosted via the magazine’s Flickr.com group: https://flickr.com/groups/truckersnews.

The winning photo, taken from the edge of “one of the most scenic highways in the country,” or U.S. 89 near Page, Ariz., says Nikirk, present a view looking out over Colorado River canyons north of the Grand Canyon.

The 51-year-old Nikirk says he’s been a digital photography enthusiast for about seven years but in the past two has become more serious, taking advantage of the Digital Photography School online forum’s weekly assignments to help develop his eye. He shoots today with a Nikon D90 with a couple different lenses, and say this about DPS (http://digital-photography-school.com): “It’s open to the public, with forums and assignments that everybody participates in. There is a wide variety of photographers, from people who have been shooting for years to beginners. A lot of people came from other sites complaining about some getting a little uppity, but DPS is very open, friendly and everybody shares everything.”

Nikirk took home a copy of Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Photography Field Guide, in addition to publication in the January edition of Truckers News, as prize. It’s not the first time Nikirk’s photo work has been featured in Truckers News. A creative self-portrait the long-hauler took and added to the magazine’s Flickr.com group was featured in the November 2009 issue as part of a pair of trucking self-portraits.

This month’s contest, in conjunction with the December cover story about drivers’ ridealong pets, asks for contest entries on the theme of “Pets and Wildlife.” Drivers can enter by joining the Photographer: Truckers News Photo Group at https://flickr.com/groups/truckersnews.
