Ford offers new trucks

Ford introduced the F-750 Super Duty Tractor, designed to be weight-
efficient for high payloads. The class 7 truck comes with Caterpillar 3126B
7.2-liter engines, up to 300 hp, or Cummins ISB 5.9-liter engines, up to 260 hp. The Allison six-speed overdrive automatic transmission is standard; six- or seven-speed manual is optional.

Ford introduced its new Class 5 entry, the E-550 Super Duty Cutaway, at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas. The truck will be used for several aftermarket modifications, including motor homes, small buses and rescue vehicles, but Ford expects to sell 42 percent of the trucks as vans for package delivery customers.

That will include delivery of small parcels through expedited carriers, such as FedEx Custom Critical. Given the rapid growth in online ordering, by 2004 package delivery “will grow some four or five times,” said John Fink, commercial truck group marketing manager.

Monitor pinpoints brake problems

MGM Brakes highlighted the advantages of its E-Stroke brake monitoring system at the Great American Trucking Show. The system uses factory-installed sensors that are precalibrated as an integral part of MGM brake service chambers and spring brakes. The system converts air-brake actuator shaft travel into an electronic signal. A module monitors the signals and outputs a warning to indicate which wheel has a problem. The monitor can be installed in the cab or outside the truck.
