On the road again

Joe Knowles says the design of his 2000 Peterbilt 379 was inspired by an ’80s factory paint scheme.

Joe Knowles has gone further in trucking than most owner-operators. He drove as a company driver and owner-operator, built a 75-truck fleet, sold it and retired after a 47-year trucking career. Still, trucking wouldn’t let go of Knowles. He returned to the road in 1999 and has no plans to stop.

“I’ve been trucking 55 years,” he says. “I really love it, just doing what I want to do.”

Knowles’ enjoyment of trucking extends beyond his own successful career, says Super K company driver Russ Ross of Hogansville, Ga., who has known Knowles for 26 years.

“His house is right by the terminal, and it is open to drivers 24/7,” Ross says. “The lights are always on, and there is always coffee made, and you can just go in and sit down and watch TV with him.
