Overcoming flu

As a driver who is out on the road and who may have contact with a number of people each day, you need to know how to fight off sickness. Following are products recommended for battling flu:

Immune boosters

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention specifically recommends flu vaccinations as the best way to protect against the flu. Alternate methods such as regimens of vitamins or supplements are helpful, but according to the CDC have not been scientifically proven to directly prevent flu. Certain products, such as Vitamin C and Zinc supplements, strengthen the immune system, which can keep your body healthier and help you fight off colds before they start.

Vitamin C supplements

Nature Made’s supplements are available in tablet, liquid softgel and chewable forms. The 500-mg pill provides users with the recommended daily dosage of vitamin C to help keep your immune system healthy, the company says. A 100-pill bottle costs less than $6 at CVS Pharmacies, and Nature Made’s website offers a coupon for $1 off any Nature Made purchase when you become a member of the company’s rewards program.

Zinc supplements

Finest Natural’s Zinc caplets help in the development of the immune system and are pharmacist recommended, the company says. A 100-caplet, 50-mg bottle of Zinc supplements is available at Walgreens Pharmacies for less than $5.

Treating Flu symptoms

Once diagnosed with the flu, over-the-counter medicines are available to treat common symptoms. For aches and pains, the CDC recommends medicines that contain acetaminophen or ibuprofen and decongestants for congestion. Humidifiers are recommended to help with breathing

Theraflu

Theraflu Flu and Chest Congestion treats chest congestion, sore throat, body ache, headache and fever, the company says. The product contains acetaminophen and is available in a citrus flavor. Coupons are available on the company’s website.

Sudaded PE

Sudafed PE is a nasal decongestant that relieves sinus congestion and pressure, the company says. The decongestant is a non-drowsy formula and is available in boxes of 18, 36 and 72. Coupons are available if purchased through Sudafed’s website.

Crane Cool Mist Humidifier

The Crane Cool Mist Humidifier provides additional comfort to cold symptoms, dry itchy skin and chapped lips, the company says. The whisper-quiet humidifier provides a minimum of 11 hours of moisture from a removable 0.9-gallon water tank. The humidifiers can be purchased through the company’s site, from Amazon or at Wal-Mart stores.
