Green Line Transportation two-truck fleet owner-operator Mike Greene, of Quincy, Mass., is the winner of Truckers News December photo contest, hosted via the magazine’s Flickr.com group: https://flickr.com/groups/truckersnews.
His photograph of a bull hauler’s live load effectively presented the reality of cattle hauling, while at once capturing a sort of humanity in the animals’ gazes.
The contest, which asked for photographic entries on the theme of “Pets and other animals/wildlife,” was held in conjunction with the magazine’s feature on truck drivers’ ridealong pets in the December issue.
For winning, Greene receives a copy of Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Photography Field Guide, in addition to publication in Truckers News’ February issue.
Greene, 60, took the winning shot after quizzing a driver at a Flying J off I-70 in Kansas about his cattle cargo. Greene says, “He told me these just came from a auction in Maryland and he dropped some of them to the locals.” The rest were headed to be part of a study of bovine feed and weight gain.
Greene, primarily a heavy-equipment hauler, shoots with a Nikon D90 and D7000, with a variety of lenses. He took up photography as a serious hobby more than a year ago, and has improved his craft via online courses offered by the New York Institute of Photography (www.nyip.com), as well as taking photos while laid over on the road and at home.
