Pennsylvania is holding public hearings throughout the state to solicit ideas for ways to reduce a $3.5-billion gap in transportation funding.
Ideas already proposed by state leaders include raising truck registration fees, increasing fuel taxes and imposing tolls on Interstates at the borders. One legislator has proposed combining the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission with the state Department of Transportation. Gov. Ed Rendell has considered seeking federal clearance again to toll I-80.
The governor convened a special session May 4 to address the state’s transportation crisis.
Hearings are scheduled for:
June 3, 2 p.m., DeSales University, Center Valley;
June 4, 10 a.m., St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia;
June 10, 2.m., Marywood University, Scranton;
June 17, 2 p.m., Clarion University, Clarion;
June 18, 10 a.m., at a site to be determined in the Monroeville-Pittsburgh area.
