The Industry’s Best-Kept Secret – Cummins ISX12

While the X15™ has been getting the lion’s share of attention this past year, the ISX12 has been making great strides in terms of fuel-efficiency improvements and optimization for the toughest duty cycles. That is especially true in the vocational market applications.

While the ISX12 has always been available with a wide selection of truck ratings from 310 to 425 hp, new truck ratings have been introduced at 450 hp with a 1650 lb-ft straight torque option and a 1450/1650 lb-ft SmartTorque2 option. The ISX12 SmartAdvantage™ Powertrain is also available for regional-haul truckers looking to maximize fuel efficiency. Plus, it is now capable of utilizing the full suite of ADEPT™ technologies, with features ranging from SmartTorque2 to Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) and SmartCoast.™

Not to be outdone in the vocational and work truck markets, today’s ISX12 is a productivity champion ideal for use with automated transmissions and applications needing Front-Engine Power Take-Off (FEPTO) or Rear-Engine Power Take-Off (REPTO). Peak torque tops out at 1650 lb-ft, which is more than sufficient to meet the power needs of most trucking operations.

Combustion and system optimization, along with improved calibration and the use of 10W30 oil, have resulted in better fuel economy, with an 8 percent gain in regional-haul applications since 2010, and a further 3 percent improvement in the SmartAdvantage™ Powertrain option. Even more impressive is an increase of up to 14.5 percent in mixers, dump trucks and refuse vehicles.

Reliability has always been a strong point of the ISX12, and it is enhanced through the use of a superior regeneration strategy that prevents Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) plugging. Cummins is so confident in the long-term dependability and durability of this engine that it is offering extended coverage for the ISX12 at a 50 percent lower cost (versus 2015) on 5-year/200,000-mile Plan 1 and 7-year/250,000-mile Plan 2 options.

The next-generation X12™ will start production in 2018, and will overlap with the ISX12 throughout the year.
