Port of Los Angeles to buy Class 8 hybrid truck

The Port of Los Angeles has awarded Vision Industries Corp., producers of the zero-emissions electric/hydrogen-hybrid Tyrano truck, a purchase order for a zero-emissions Class 8 hybrid-electric truck.

The port says the cost to purchase the zero-emissions truck will not exceed $280,000 including sales tax. This big-rig would be one of only a handful of zero-emissions Class 8 hybrid trucks operating in the world.

“Zero-emissions technology is no longer a futuristic concept, and this remarkable truck presents us with another opportunity to test and advance the use of tomorrow’s technologies in today’s diesel-dominant port trucking environment,” says Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D., executive director of the Port of Los Angeles.

The port says the truck will be used for moving the City of Los Angeles Harbor Department’s TransPorter exhibit, and that it also continues to negotiate with Vision for the purchase and evaluation of the company’s hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid-electric trucks. The heavy-duty big-rigs will be tested to evaluate their suitability for short- and medium-distance drayage operations and other similar applications.
