NEW TIRES FROM CONTINENTAL
Continental Tire North America introduced seven new tires for the heavy and severe-service truck markets. The tires include the HSU, which is a 10,000 pound rated tire with 24/32-inch tread depth, and cut- and tear-resistant tread. The new HTL trailer tire is built for extended mileage and resistance to rapid shoulder wear in the long-haul market. The HSC is an all-position tire with a curb rib to reduce damage from curbing and cuts. The HSC has a stone ejection system to reduce stone retention and casing penetration.

SMART TRACTION CONTROL
Bendix ABS with Smart ATC is an automatic traction control system with the ability to distinguish and respond to two of the most demanding traction scenarios. These are accelerating uphill (requiring more traction) and driving into a curve (requiring more stability). Smart ATC responds with the appropriate level of traction control for each situation, giving more power to the driver as soon as warranted.

VE 465 HP POWER CURVE IMPROVED
The VE 465, engineered to meet the October 2002 emission regulations, has an improved horsepower curve, compared to Volvo’s previous 465-hp rating. Although it has the same peak torque of 1650 pounds-feet, the new VE 465 has a flatter power output curve, which means drivers can access peak power through more of the engine’s range. Horsepower is maintained at 465 hp from 1500 rpm through 1825 rpm.

LIFT-AXLE SUSPENSION
Ridewell Suspensions’ Mono-Lift 225 auxiliary axle suspension has a 25,000-pound capacity for vocational truck applications. The non-steerable, air-ride/air-lift unit is 100 pounds lighter than previous units designed for 22,000-pound and 25,000-pound capacity axles. NEW GOODYEAR STEER TIRE
Goodyear’s new long-haul steer tire is designed to give long-haul operators uniform wear, more miles to removal and better retreadability. The tire’s five-rib tread design “features a barrel footprint to optimize tread wear performance,” the company says. As the original tread wears down, jagged or angled groove walls across the footprint are exposed to “maximize traction and handling and give better bite.”
