Rebates available for anti-idling equipment

The federal Shorepower Truck Electrification Project still has rebate money available for owner-operators and small fleet owners to purchase anti-idling equipment.

The STEP program’s original $10 million in rebates is down to about $3 million, said a spokesman for the program’s administrator, Cascade Sierra Solutions. Rebates are available for battery-powered HVAC systems, diesel APUs, cold-plate systems and evaporative coolers. Rebates for trailer refrigeration units have been allocated, although applications are being accepted on a waiting list.

The rebates represent up to 20 percent of the installed price based on the specific type of equipment. For example, APUs or generator sets configured to operate on plug-in power, are eligible for up to $2,000 in rebates each. Other rebates are $1,600 for battery HVAC systems; $700, battery evaporative cooler systems; $260, thermal storage systems; and $3,200, truck cold plate systems. The equipment must be SmartWay verified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Owner-operators must apply for the rebates and receive a certificate before installing the equipment. Applications are available here. For a listing of approved equipment and suppliers, click here.
