A recall of certain Dana Spicer steer axles that has already affected more than 19,000 tractors now affects a few more after Daimler Trucks North America issued a recall on approximately 41 Western Star and Freightliner trucks. Another recall issued recently affects more than 300 Wabash National van trailers.

DTNA is recalling some 2016 Western Star 4900 and 2016 Freightliner Cascadia tractors that are equipped with certain Dana Spicer D-Series and E-Series steer axles.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, the castellated nut on the steer axles may not be properly torqued, allowing the tie rod to loosen. If the tie rod loosens, it can disconnect from the steering knuckle, causing a complete loss of steering in the trucks.

The recall affects trucks equipped with certain Dana D-Series and E-Series steer axles. NHTSA documents state that drivers of affected trucks would notice an audible noise and looseness in steering before the tie rod fully disconnects.

DTNA will begin notifying owners on Dec. 4, and dealers will inspect the torque of the castellated nut and tie rod, free of charge, tightening or replacing if necessary. Owners can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 with recall number FL-751. NHTSA’s recall number is 17V-628.

Wabash National also announced a recall of approximately 314 model year 2018 van trailers equipped with certain Meritor suspensions with EX225 brakes. Great Dane and Trail King have previously issued a recall on approximately 92 trailers equipped with the same Meritor suspensions.

Brake caliper bolts on these axles may not be properly torqued, which can cause a caliper to detach, resulting in a loss of braking.

Wabash will notify owners beginning Dec. 5, and dealers will inspect the bolts and replacing any that are loose or missing, free of charge. Owners can contact Wabash customer service at 1-765-771-5300. NHTSA’s recall number is 17V-633.
