Dart’s Dallas Contractors
Karen and Steven “Scooby” Schoonover are Contractors of the Year for 2002 at Dart Transit Company’s Dallas Operating Center. They began the year as a husband-wife team on Dart’s national fleet, and then moved to the Lancaster city fleet.

The Schoonovers received a marble trophy and leather jackets as mementos of their achievement, a $1,000 bonus and a free lunch sponsored by Dart officials.

Safety Honor
Dot Transportation Inc. garnered first place in the 2002 National Safety Contest sponsored by the American Trucking Associations and the ATA Safety & Loss Prevention Management Council. The award is based on the frequency of vehicle accidents per million miles traveled. DTI’s 0.38 per million frequency led its division of General Commodities Truckload/Line Haul between 50 million and 100 million miles. DTI drivers logged nearly 52 million miles last year with only 20 recordable accidents.

Dart Transit Driver Wins Vacation
Owens Corning’s first National Driver Appreciation Award was presented to Beau Baldwin, an independent contractor with Dart Transit Company. Baldwin was given the “Leave the Driving To Us” award, a vacation prize worth $2,000.

Beau, a native Texan, purchased his first tractor in August and joined the Dart Advantage team. His first shipment for Dart originated at the Owens Corning plant in Waxahachie, Texas, destined for a customer in Olive Branch, Miss. His trip was picked at random from some 9,500 van, flatbed and tanker shipments made by Owens Corning in North America during National Driver Appreciation Week in August. Beau plans to take a camping trip to the Carolinas with his fiancée, Amber.

Quality Awards
Atlas Van Lines has again won an award for the category of household goods carriers in the 20th annual “Quest for Quality” survey, conducted by Logistics Management magazine. The survey reflects services provided during 2002 and represents the sixth consecutive year for Atlas to receive the award. Results appeared in the magazine’s August issue and were garnered from more than 2,700 respondents who purchase transportation or third-party services.

FedEx Freight, a provider of regional and interregional less-than-truckload freight was recognized for its dedication to service, reliability and on-time performance in two separate categories in Logistics Management’s survey.

FedEx Freight was the only multiregional carrier to achieve a Quest for Quality award in the Multiregional and Interregional LTL Carrier category.

In addition, FedEx Freight also won the Quest for Quality award in the Western Regional LTL Carrier category.

While this is the first year FedEx Freight has been recognized under its current brand name in the Quest for Quality survey, FedEx Freight East and FedEx Freight West both have a long history of recognition, winning 18 and 11 Quest for Quality awards, respectively.

Schneider Award
Schneider National has been named a Chrysler Group Gold Award winner for 2002. Schneider National was one of five winners named in the truckload category. The Chrysler Group Gold Award is presented to suppliers that demonstrate outstanding performance in the areas of cost, quality, technology and delivery. Schneider National hauled 160,000 loads for the Chrysler Group in 2002 and provided truckload, dedicated and intermodal services with a nearly perfect on-time rate.

Swift Drivers
Swift Transportation Inc. recently recognized the 10th anniversary of service of three of its employees. The company honored Larry Ellis of its Richmond, Va., terminal, Loyed Mott of its Troutdale, Ore., terminal and Joe Sinclair of its Willows, Calif., terminal.

PTL Drivers
Paschall Truck Lines named Terry Soenksen as its Company Driver of the Month for June and Ted Rymsza as the Owner-Operator of the Month.

Soenksen has been with Paschall Truck Lines for nearly 10 of the 29 years he’s been driving professionally. This is the second time Soenksen has received the Driver of the Month honor. He first received it in October of 1997.

Rymsza originally hails from Poland, but has lived in the United States for approximately 10 years. He started his career in Poland where he drove for 14 years.

TMC Drivers of the Quarter
TMC Transportation honored Terry Babbs, Alan Wiegard and Louis Steele with the Driver of the Quarter Award for the first, second and third quarters of 2003, respectively. All three drivers are now eligible for the 2003 Wheel Master Award to be given to one previous “Driver of the Quarter” winner at the end of the year.

CFI Drivers of the Month
Contract Freighters Inc. has named its August 2003 drivers of the month.

Company Driver of the Month was Ricky Norman of Big Sandy, Texas, who has been with CFI for nine years. Company Team Driver of the Month was awarded to Carl and Beck Holt of San Antonio, Texas, who started with the company five years ago.

Contractor of the Month was Luciano Benitez Jr. of Kennedy, Texas, who joined CFI in 1999.
Contractor Team of the Month went to Garlan and Sylvia Yoder of Broadway, Va., who joined CFI in 2002.

Winners are automatically nominated for the 2003 year-end award in their respective categories.
