Study touts benefits of in-cab camera system with paired driver training

Crashes tracked in the report differ slightly, however, excluding those that “appeared to be non-fault or the result of weather, road condition, vehicle malfunction or alcohol/drugs,” the study says, in order to get as close as possible to those that resulted in some measure from driver behavior that could potentially be mitigated by the kind of training the DriveCam system enables. At once, the study issued a few caveats at the bottom of the document about the difficulty of determining fault from accident reports and other data-quality issues.

Lytx (formerly DriveCam, Inc.), makers of a forward- and driver-facing video camera system for fleets and consumers, is touting results of a company-commissioned analysis conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute that shows use of the system could potentially reduce commercial motor vehicle crashes by as much as a third annually. Fatality reductions, the study concludes, might be on the order of 801 avoided, or 20 percent of fatalities resulting from truck crashes averaged over years 2010-12. 

The study follows a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration-sponsored VTTI on-road experiment conducted in 2009 that measured results from two fleets utilizing the DriveCam system, which concluded that use of the system reduced by 75.5 percent the occurrence of “severe safety-related events,” in the language of the report — think very-hard braking, abrupt swerves and the like, says Del Lisk, Lytx Vice President for Safety Services.

DriveCam-type systems were recommended by a small minority of members of FMCSA’s Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee at the February 2014 meeting to be considered for unspecified potential regulation — some members suggested requiring widespread use

Lisk, asked whether the new VTTI analysis presaged a lobbying effort to require the devices, insists on the contrary. “If we’re active in any form of [lobbying], we’re in the opposite direction,” he says. Improving safety by using a video technology is not as “simple as slamming a camera in a vehicle and everybody would get better.”


‘Zero highway deaths’ goal needs general public target

Regulators' ultimate goal pondered, in light of the laundry list of highway-bill recommendations the MCSAC delivered to Congress two weeks back.

All the same, Lisk believes driver acceptance of the technology as a training tool is gaining ground — a pilot test of DriveCam use at a driver-training school is working to get those new drivers accustomed to the technology. “The instructor has a button that can trigger a manual event,” he says, the system recording the eight seconds prior to the event and the four seconds afterward, just as the system works on the road when triggered by a change in force or other safety-critical event.

The instructor then can go over what the driver did with video of on-road actions. With “the ability to see what they did,” Lisk adds, “they’re improving faster.”

And when said drivers move on to work for “a client with that technology,” Lisk says, they’re more accepting of it than many drivers the company encounters resistance from today. “There’s a natural hesitation to put video inside the cab of the truck,” he adds. “It’s change, but independent studies like this help people to understand the value this can bring.” 


Smile for the camera, but keep your eyes on the road

Having anyone’s camera inches away from you virtually the entire time you’re doing your job, and knowing that you don’t have control of the on/off ...

DriveCam has not gone to market to independent owner-operators and very-small fleets, as a general rule, says Lisk, but he sees potential value there in two areas: 1) “If an accident occurs, more likely than not it’s not the driver’s fault, but they’ll often get blamed. The video is a really powerful tool to protect against false accusations.” 2) “Even the best owner-operator can become a better driver – in that application it’d be a self-coaching tool.” After a close call on the road, “they can go online [to see the 12-second video captured] and learn from it.”

A single-truck fleet version of the system, he says, might more closely resemble the pricing structure and model of the company’s consumer solution, with a $40-$50 per month subscription cost for use.

    It is proven statistically that truck drivers are not at fault in most 2 vehicle incidents. Any trial lawyer will tell their defendant to not make a statement at the scene. All it will take is one look of frustration on the face of a driver due to the actions of the other vehicle and now they are branded as having road rage.
    I do have 4 cameras on my truck one looking out the drive & passenger windows, as well as one pointing fore & aft, but none record me. I have been driving 15 years and in that time have been hit 4 times by cars who ran stop signs. The last time it happened I had my cameras. I let the offender give her statement then I played the video for the cop….. She went to jail for making false statements to an officer.

    I have also conducted a similar ‘ Study ‘, no doubt, scientific also..

    Of the 300 Trillion Road Drivers I personally interviewed at the Dunkin Donuts drive-up window on April 1st, 2018, not one Driver has expressed an interest in ‘ Being on Film via a Cab mounted Recorder ‘ … with most grabbing their crotch saying ‘ I got your camera right here Safety Dude ‘.

    Of course this was a Double Blind Study … I slept for most of the 15 minutes it took to interview the 300 Trillion Drivers and I had failed the Eye Exam for my last 50 or 600 DOT Physicals … which is the reason for so many missed Appointments at various Union grocery warehouses, can’t see the clock … not to mention I don’t really ‘ gas ‘ ( that’s ‘ give a shit ‘ for those of you in Rio Linda )

    Guess what I’m really saying …. Study This College Boy.

    What the hell is wrong with this industry today? I’ve been accident free for 29 years and know dozens of drivers with more years than that and not one camera did it. I guess today’s truckers need baby sitters. Companies that require cameras in order to drive for them should be boycotted and people should go elsewhere. As long as people put up with it, they’ll be more and more of this. I’m glad I’m at the tail end of my career of this joke we call truck driving!

    The truck is the truckers home. If we are going to start filming people to see what exactly they’re doing in the personal homes I say we start with the politicians, government officials and police officers. It’s unconstitutional and crossing all borders of a person’s rights. If they want safety start by giving the truckers time to sit and eat rather than eating while they’re driving. Give them time to sleep and shower. The trucking companies need to start paying these guys for the time they are on the road not just when the tires are going ’round and ’round. To make this job safe you need to start by giving he driver decent pay for a decent job. Pay him pennies, only when the wheels move, and you’re forcing them to do everything they can behind the wheel of a moving truck. Want safety, change the way the drivers are paid and you’ll see a big drop in truck caused accidents. Common sense my friends, common sense.

    I agree truckers are less times at fault than four wheelers. Front facing cameras may help prove that fact. I see no benefit in the invasion of a driver facing camera. That just adds stress and can contribute to more accidents.

    Most of the articles about high tech Monitoring devices will be slanted so the DRIVER will more Readily ACCEPT it. There will be MORE and MORE of these handy gadgets installed to OBSERVE the boy/slave/driver. Speed limiters are on the way….these Cameras will be common…electro logs..we are watching the NEW TRUCKING unfold.

    A few months ago I commented on this exact subject. Any camera inside of the cab is a distraction and causes stress to the driver. Also it is an invasion of privacy. Any company who installs these devices won’t keep a real truck driver on their payroll for very long. Changing the way trucks are operated doesn’t improve anything. Trucking is and always will be a seat of your pants, learn as you go occupation regardless of the electronic gizmo’s they try to add to the industry. What’s really needed too improve the conditions for truck drivers are more parking facilities, better pay, less costly insurance (both medical and truck ins.) , and most importantly a team of trucker friendly representatives in Washington DC so that the voice of the truck driver can be heard and not ignored, we need a bunch of lobbyists on our side to influence the decisions made by the The Department of Transportation, FMSCA is the Gestapo/ communist party of the 2000’s.

    Unfortunately paying drivers more is going to do little in the way of improved highway safety. You can’t fix stupid, nor can you regulate inattentiveness.
    I agree that the HOS needs to change so drivers can stop the clock to take a safety nap , avoid rush hour and to eat, all without penalty. That is going to be the biggest most acceptable change and will make our highways safer.
    You still have 85 % of the truck/ car accidents caused by the driver of cars. Fix that issue then our highways will be safer for everyone. Cameras in cab facing drivers of CMV’s will more often than not be a distraction and be responsible for mishaps.
    Drivers being recorded may have that “what if “ repercussions issue of the recording on their mind and make a wrong decision . It will be based likely on “if I do this it may cost me my job” or “am I turning my head enough to not be considered tired or not paying attention.?” It will happen. You can bet on that. If the driver admits to it is the question. Who is going to view these recording and make a decision that may effect the drivers career? Cameras in cab are not going to absolve the driver or the carrier of liability often enough to be worth the turnover rate it may cause. Ambulance chasing lawyers are coming on board as they smell money, not safety.

    Reducing commercial vehicle crashes by a third is wishful thinking and it sounds good to the buyers . Not a reality.

    Since 85% to 88 % of car/ truck accidents are caused by the driver of the car , how about attacking the real problem? , The drivers of the vehicles that causes the accidents ? Car manufacturers have automatic back up cameras so why not a minor change to go from back up view to facing driver view when transmission is in drive? It can record driver, speed, GPS and do every thing they want in a truck but in the car. . That won’t work due to the out cry it would incite.
    ACLU would be all over it .

    We might just reduce the accident rate by at least enough to be worth while and make a real difference… Then our highways will be safer for everyone.
    Remember that EOBR’s and cameras are for control, Safety is just a term the hierarchy use to make it palatable.

    The camera comes with a Shock Collar for the drivers neck. the determination of the dispatcher the driver is doing something UNSAFE…he receives a friendly “training shock”….to remind him he is being WATCHED and will be Punished at the dispatchers discretion…..then ordered into the terminal for a Cavity Probe.

    As a real owner operator with my own authority I am expected to know all of the federal laws and all of the laws of every state I go through I also need to have a business degree a Law degree I have to be a supper hero because I save people’s lives every day by not running over then when they do all the stupid crap they do 100 times a day because they just don’t learn and just cant understand the world does not revolve around them 41 years driving and they still amaze me how stupid people can be . Lets put cameras on all cops, doctors, lawyers, and every one in DC car drivers who start 85 percent of all accidents then you can put one in my truck and lets see how long that lasts .If it is good for one then lets make it good for all .Washington You are a joke and don’t have a clue what you are doing .I have said it be for and I will say it again I challenge any one in on Capital Hill to ride in my truck for a month and go back and tell the rest of them in there little elite group what it is like out here .I say we fire all of them and put truck drivers and farmers on Capital Hill and restore good old good sense back in Government .They Want to get rid of all of us O/O because they are scared of us they want all big companies doing all the transportation so they can take over if they need to and they cant do that with us .

    Having personal experience with the system, once you realize it is not “spying” on you the whole time, only when an event triggers the camera, you really just forget it is ther unless you are driving erratically. The you will get coached by your manager. It does let managers know why accidentare happening. The phantom “I was run off the road” accident now shows up as “the driver fell asleep”.
    Good information in my opinion.

The day there’s a camera in my truck is the day I turn in my keys. UNBELIEVEABLE! I feel sorry for the young suckers coming into this business. Having your boss being able to spy on them whenever.
