Support for trucking shutdown, convoy waning

| October 10, 2013

The number of trucks needed to lock up the Capital Beltway — one of the intentions of the Ride for the Constitution — is 17,000. And to fuel that many trucks? $13.5 million.

Support for this weekend’s Ride for the Constitution — billed variously as a shutdown, rally, buy-nothing protest and a series of convoys — has been falling in recent days with growing perceptions of a lack of credibility among its organizers and an overall lack of direction and organization. Support among Overdrive readers, too, has plummeted in recent days, falling to 35 percent midday Thursday, down from 38 percent Wednesday and 43 percent Tuesday.

Capping the overall dissolution of the event was a D.C. convoy coordinator’s public admission that the extreme elements of his plan to take over the Capital Beltway — I-495 in the Washington, D.C., area — Friday in an attempt to cause a traffic jam and then move to Capitol Hill and arrest members of Congress was simply meant to “ruffle some feathers” of national media, according to a report in The Washington Post

Questioning the logistics of the shutdown, convoy in the capital

Those concerned with actually taking on over-regulation of the trucking industry have also expressed disappointment in the movement, due to its broad and slightly outlandish array of demands — such as removing President Barack Obama from office — and lack of clear focus on industry issues, like hours of service, unpaid detention time, etc.

Moreover, trucking advocacy associations like the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and the American Trucking Associations both have expressed disapproval for the shutdown and convoy.

Kevin Rutherford on the protests: Use your head, don’t shut down

In a statement OOIDA says it opposes the movement and its threats and says the shutdown only stands to damage the image of trucking and truckers:

“The individuals leading this particular effort have no direct affiliation with trucking and appear to be using truckers in order to gain media attention and air other political grievances. We do not support assembling in an unlawful, unpermitted manner, committing crimes, making threats on our lawmakers, or behaving in such a way to cast safe, professional truck drivers in a negative light.”

The most effective way to effect change, OOIDA says in its statement, is to “conduct long-term campaigns and encourage an open dialogue between truckers and their representatives.”

Poll: Will you be participating at all in the Ride for the Constitution?

ATA in its one-sentence statement says it does not “endorse or condone the activities of these few individuals.”

This was a stupid idea in the first place. A more effective type of protest would be to shut down all trucks wherever they are at on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when shippers and consignees are actually working which would cause a hardship would get much more positive attention and let an organization like OOIDA speak for truckers using the issues that truly affect the trucking industry. Not that I want to see drivers or O/O’s lose money those three days (nor myself either) but something needs to be done….just not in the way the Shutdown on Washington wants to do it.

  • Sed

    I’m here for shutdown

  • CJ

Their plan to create said havoc in DC would accomplish nothing more than reducing the opinion of truck drivers from the poor opinion we already face from the general public. It’s poorly planned, no consideration for the actual consequences were taken and the scope of their reasons for the “shutdown” were too broad. Pick ONE subject and stick to it…not constantly changing and adding new reasons for it. This whole thing has been a farce from the beginning.

  • Voodoolou

This was a bad idea because the people who started have no idea what we have to put up with since ARE NOT TRUCKERS!!!!

  • Rockwell

The truckers are desperate for relief from overbearing regulation. The organizers of T2SDA recognize this and are capitalizing on this fact. The truckers supporting this are mental midgets, desperate for survival and willing to jump on any train that is remotely bound for the destination of Voice and Resolution. Saddening to watch this industry used and abused in this fashion, unfortunately, the entire industry’s reputation will suffer for the actions of the industry’s minority who can not think for themselves.

  • RH

This is no better than the crap you read on the restroom stalls.

  • Shawn L Hubbard

If you read posts on here from truckers, most of them seem like racist rednecks who have no agenda other than hating on Obama. I didn’t vote for Obama but at the same time I’m not in favor of an impeachment nor am I in favor of any action which inconveniences the public, which has no role in trucking regulation. I would be willing to bet that most of these drivers who are complaining are not members of OOIDA. if they were willing to put their money where their mouth is, we might be able to get something done in Washington. I’ve been a member of OOIDA for 10 years now and they’re the only organization out here that truly represents the trucker interests. You don’t have to be an independent operator to be a member. I’m a company driver myself. If you truly want change, I encourage you to support and join OOIDA.

  • Rockwell

    Right on!

  • haller

So thank you Overdrive for your support.. I vividly remember George Bush saying after 9/11, “you are either with me or you’re a terrorist” , and that’s quoted.. The only person not to agree with George Bush and take his side was Barack Obama………….

  • espfan

Even if you are bjitching about it, stay at home. Don`t take any freight. Let`s see what`s gonna come out of it. If you are on these pages it means you aren`t happy with current regulations.
Or make couple hundred to pay your gas bill….

  • haller

there is NO PLAN to create havoc.

  • haller

I shut down for the week

  • Rockwell

That,s exactly correct! If you aren’t happy with your rate, simple, DON’T TRUCK IT! Truckers as a whole have the power to “dictate the rate”. That’s solution driven, not radical driven.More regs = higher rates, period.

  • James Deboard

OOIDA Has never done anything to improve pay for the drivers and the ATA has only the companies in its interest. I do not think shutting down 495 or anyother interstate will solve these problems.drivers must refuse to work for low pay and wages. These companies paying between 30 and 40 cents per mile are the problem. Detention pay has always been a problem. Just because a company has detention pay in its contract with its shippers does not mean it is going to pass this on to the driver. Drivers if you want better pay and better pay for detention there is s simple answer.Do not accept a job as a driver for poor pay and benefits. Refuse to work for less than you need to be paid. I retired in april 2012 and It was mainly because of low pay and low detention pay. I had health problems but could have kept working,I refused to work for what these companies that were offering poor pay and benefits. Just Say NO!!!!

  • Rockwell

Just say NO!!! is 100% Correct. However, it is NOT OOIDA,s job NOR the Gov’s to ensure you get a fair rate or fair pay, that is your job/responsibility as an individual and/or business person.

  • htown trucker

the only way to accomplish this would be to have to 10 largest companies to threaten to shut down. it would certainly be more affective than a phony government shutdown.

  • James Deboard

    Gosh,thats exactly what I said!!!!

  • Rockwell

Not really, you are stating dissatisfaction of OOIDA inability to better your pay/rate, not their job! OOIDA fights for what it can, increasing pay, that’s on you solely. Beyond that, I agree with your post 100%

  • James Deboard

I belonged to OOIDA for several years,my statement was that OOIDA had done nothing to improve drivers pay and I stand by that remark. I Guess its not there job, they do many other things to help drivers. It is petty arguments like this though that hurts trucking, drivers do nothing to come together to help themselves. you cannot get 5 drivers to agree on anything, Who or what organization is out there that has tried to get drivers to all come together to help themselves. OOIDA has done many things to help the drivers but drivers are not organized. each one has a different complaint about somethings different and very few of them agree about anything.the closest we ever had to someone to help get us organized was the BOZO but now he is gone. RIP

  • Roland Caston

I drive a truck to make a living. I make a political statement by writing or calling my representative and voting. Disruption of the nation’s supply chain is one of the worst ideas I can think of.

  • Rockwell

We differ here, I don’t classify this as a petty argument, lets not undermine what little the trucker does have, such as OOIDA. Again, they do what they can within membership/budgetary constraints. Hoffa, Bozo, RIP! Agree or not, both great activists. T2SDA by comparison, a complete capitalizing joke. One other point, say what you want, but OOIDA is far more organized than T2SDA could ever dream of. OOIDA may not have directly increased pay/rate, but they fight like the devil to hold costly regulations down, indirectly increasing your pay (or at least holding status quo) Truckers don’t need someone to organize them, they just need to make hard business decisions. To quote you, “Just say NO!!!”. That alone will dictate the rate. In any event, we both want whats best for the industry and I think we can both agree T2SDA isn’t it. Stay well Sir.

  • Richard Wilson

If 10.000 truckers would show up for a MCSAC meeting or write a letter of their dissatisfaction to the committee would be taking the protest to the heart of who makes up those regulations, but that would take intelligence not following a radical Pidepiper.

  • little red

How stupid so you think truckers are? If you have something in your house a trucker brought it like groceries and furniture your car and gas.

  • Part-Time

The best way to bring attention to the current issues that are pushing owner operators out of the industry would be to publicly disrupt the state causing the biggest issue. Just clog up every road leading in and out of California and you would bring attention to the media where you could calmly speak your mind on the issues whether it be emissions regulations, hour of service, healthcare, taxes, and so on…. Just inside the California borders, simply park your truck. (with the 4-ways on) and stay put. The media will come to you. Just make sure to be courteous to all other motorist when they ask what the heck is going on. I would also leave enough room on the shoulder to allow motorist in their personal (non-commercial) vehicle to safely pass with guidance from the truck drivers. We don’t need to stop all traffic to get noticed, just the long line of trucks blocking the primary lanes in and out of California will get the media’s attention and the rest will just fall into place.

This problematic from the get go..OOIDA in its original form would have led this movement…NOT walk away from it and the second biggest issue is that what the use of shutting down beltway in D.C. there’s nothing going on there on weekends anyway. until we get shippers onboard or get their attention nothing will change except the loss of revenue for the time the trucks set still. I will say that I am quite disappointed that OOIDA and other so called Trucking organizations continue to run scared of any push back efforts ….sad that this country has become so pussified with spineless wimps….Gen Patton would retract his famous quote i think…just sayin!

  • Nomadi Soulsta

Teamsters have not done anything to help drivers in decades and they have reduced drivers pay and contributed to this rogue administration…thats counterproductive!

  • Mickey Price

The way to do this is to make demands that will help all truckers. The way to reach these goals are this. Send two trucking persons from state to Washington to make the requests for change. After the requests are turned down state wit five state shut down. No one hauls nothing in or out of those states for a week then if the demands are not meet add five states. In a few weeks the demands will be meet. Start with five east coast state including DC. This will work but don’t get crazy on the demands keep them on the issue.

  • MileHiMoose

Your either part of the problem or part of the sollution ! Overdrive, Put your Pens, Pencils and cCayons away. Put Down Your Laptops and keyboards as well.
You are part of the problem, not part of the solution!

  • Robin

come on… get your facts straight! the comment “That the extreme elements of his plan to take over the Capital Beltway — I-495 in the Washington, D.C., area — Friday in an attempt to cause a traffic jam and then move to Capitol Hill and arrest members of Congress” was done by a troll and not by the organizers secondly [and sadly] under the Constitution article 1 section 6 states that members of Congress are immune from arrest while serving. [Look it up] and third, another misnomer is that they said from the start that this is not 100% about trucks, that it is about the corruption in government, Obama care and the regulations that truckers are put through. and as far as being a stupid idea… I’ll disagree. Okay, because of the expense and the logistics about actually joining a convoy and making it to DC may not be possible however, just a large number of people that supported this effort alone sent a message to get other things started for example, overpasses to impeach Obama, million bikers are going this weekend, million vet March October 13. People are getting upset and they’re responding the best way that they know how… if all of these people and their supporters sent letters just like they did with Syria it does make a difference. Remember, “United we stand, divided we fail…”

  • Mind Games

What this does is make OOIDA look weak and thus they would lose members and the cash flow too.
This was a bit of a fluke in that it got so much attention and that was viewed as a threat in its self not that the message held much water but the threat of those who bank off our pockets loosing their cut was the big issue that made OOIDA sweat.
Next time OOIDA we will finish what we start and you guys can go hob nob with your rich friends in DC.
I truly think we are big boys and can and will take care of our problems when we get tired of being misled and in a nutshell screwed over like a two dollar hoe.
One day we will get tired of making the fat cats rich while our families suffer and then and only then we will we be able to look ourselves in the mirror and call ourselves men and or knights of the highways once again.

  • Bruce at 1600 Watch

#T2SDA was put together in a short time and is not well organized, but I’m glad they’re doing it. The United States is in an extreme position and is financially weaker than at any time in history. We get weaker every day, while at the same time our out-of-control Federal government is eating our freedom, independence and wealth like a rabid T-Rex munching a tiny rabbit.

As citizens, if we wait until everything is perfect before standing up for ourselves, we will never do anything because perfect doesn’t exist. Independent truckers are living in a discriminatory 2013 world of draconian regulation designed to stifle independent business and protect government sanctioned monopoly for the benefit of I don’t know who.

Things could be different or better, but at least #T2SDA is doing something, just as our Founders did in 1776. Hopefully, from this beginning truckers can learn to be more effective and more organized in defense of their industry and its future.

For what it’s worth I really like Montana’s idea of nationwide shutdown by safely sitting. Thanks Montanan!

Thank you #T2SDA and God Bless you folks.,

    Bruce K.

    To all truckers….Let’s shutdown California!!!!
I been an Owner Op for 18 years and live in California. Why should I have move out of the state that seen me grow to keep making a living? That is b.s. We need to come together and fight for our rights.

As long as there are brainless morons willing to work for nothing so they can ” see the world thru their windshield” or ” Be their own boss” nothing will change. After 20 years I saw the light. The only way to affect change is when No One is willing to do the dirty work. WAKE UP!!! NO ONE CARES!!!

  • Grabba Gear

I don’t think any trucker out there doesn’t know what the reasons are for your angst and anger today and I’m betting they’re the same for most if not all of you.
For a company driver it’s over regulation, too much work for too little pay, and being under the company gun.
For the owner op it’s too much regulation and being in a dog eat dog world of fighting to keep on top of the bottom. Instead of being in a position of dictating rates, you fight to get the best rate you can, no big secret there.
For everyone, it’s trying to keep what’s yours and seeing everyone else out there trying to take it. Nobody could blame you.
If the rest of America actually saw what you go through instead of “Ice Road Truckers” or “Shipping Wars” on tv , they might come away with a better understanding and impression of what you folks really go through. I’m not putting down those shows, I enjoy watching them myself, but come on, they aren’t showing the reality of what most drivers are going through on a daily basis.
So, while “Convoy” and “Smokey and the Bandit” are great movies to watch, they are not based in fact of what a trucker is going through today.
The idea of a shut down isn’t a bad idea, but the message was lost, it was not clear and concise, it was muddied by someone else’s objectives and obviously many truckers could not get behind that.
Impeach Obama? Really? If that were to happen, it needs to come from the American people en mass, not from just truckers, your real angst was over regulation, the effect of it on lowering your pay and livelihood.
Things like getting warning tickets during an inspection you can’t fight, yet go on your record, hours of service changes that force you to drive tired and sleep when you aren’t, not being able to restart your clock like you should be, detention during loading and unloading, not being compensated for it then running out of hours and not being legally able to run to the nearest truck stop or parking area for a decent break, EOBR’s, EPA, and the list goes on.
Truckers– other truckers and the public could get behind that once they understood what it was about, but not some other agenda that has nothing to do with yours. Yes, some are miffed at those things too-but some aren’t.
And a shutdown on the weekend? Come on, many are home on the weekend anyway, make it seen and heard or forget it. All this can be done without being nasty and possibly despised for it instead of everyone getting behind it- that’s what needs to happen.
It’s too late for me, I closed the doors because of this kind of crap and working my ass off for little to nothing, then finally seeing the light for what it is and saying enough is enough, but I’m 110% with you guys if the message was right…something needs to happen.
Yes, my truck is still sitting in the driveway, because for some reason I can’t let it go.
America depends on you, get them with us, not saying “oh, no, another truckers strike”. Make them understand.
and support you. It shouldn’t be that hard. Good luck and bless you.
