Surface trade up 37.6% in June

Surface transportation trade between the United States and Canada and Mexico increased 37.6 percent in June over June 2009, reaching $69.9 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

BTS reported the value of U.S. surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in June remained 5.8 percent below the June 2008 level despite the 2009-2010 increase. North American surface freight value rose 4.6 percent in June from May. Month-to-month changes can be affected by seasonal variations and other factors.

U.S.–Canada surface transportation trade gained 35.5 percent to $42 billion in June from June 2009. U.S.–Mexico surface transportation trade increased 41 percent to $27.8 billion in June from June 2009.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. In June, 86.6 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved on land.
