Surfing for parts

Finding the right parts when you need them can mean the difference between earning a living and stacking up bills. Whether you do your own repairs or have them done, it’s not always easy to determine exactly what part you need. Having to hunt down the part can be even more trouble.

Although you can’t actually order the parts online, truck makers’ sites can help you determine what part is needed and the most convenient dealership for ordering. And that can save you valuable time.

SELECTION. Some manufacturers now provide online catalogs that list a majority of the parts they offer. You can typically search for the part you need by supplier, product or, in some cases, part number. For instance, Volvo Trucks offers its accessories catalog online in downloadable form. If you’re not sure which part you need, some sites offer parts guides that include descriptions and illustrations.

ORDERING. Once you locate the part, you can order it through any dealership you choose. Most sites have a toll-free number you can use to find the closest dealer. Some sites offer coupons for select parts.

SHIPPING. Parts are usually shipped within two days. Some manufacturers offer same-day shipping on in-stock items with guaranteed delivery times from their regional distribution centers. Shipping is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week from almost all dealers.

WARRANTIES. Most parts carry a one-year warranty, which includes replacement and installation if you have a service center do the work. If you do the work, keep your receipt and paperwork in case you need to swap the part at any dealership during the warranty period.

Choosing the right part is vital to keeping your truck in top shape. If you choose to do the installation yourself, do your homework before you attempt a repair and make sure you understand the specifications and installation instructions before you begin.
