Symposium Highlights Changing Industry

More than 200 fleet managers gathered in Tuscaloosa, Ala., last month for the Randall Trucking Media Group’s 11th annual symposium. Working under the theme, “Meeting the Challenges of a Changing Workforce,” participants at the two-day meeting heard a number of panel discussions on workforce issues such as recruitment, retention, motivation and legal challenges. Panels also examined current trends within the industry and strategies for dealing with change.

Dealing with market challenges and workforce shortages were key topics during the first day’s session. Fleet managers were urged to “think outside the box” in attracting and retaining drivers. The next day’s program included a presentation by consultant and motivational speaker Dan Baker, as well as panels on workforce legal issues, the future of truckload and a presentation on successful leadership from Bill Webb of the Texas Motor Transportation Association.
