C.R. England to enter into $38M settlement in lawsuit over truck lease agreements
C.R. England has entered into a $37.8 million class action settlement agreement with 17,519 drivers to end a 2011 lawsuit over its independent contractor and truck lease program. The settlement terms await final approval by a federal court.

DOT allows another major fleet to let pre-CDL operators drive team
FMCSA says opposition stated the CLP holders who had passed the CDL skills test were too inexperienced and are safer with CDL holders in the front seat. The agency argues that had the drivers been in their home state when they passed the skills test, they would have already obtained a CDL, and could drive on their own with no one in the truck with them.

The exemption allows commercial learner’s permit holders that have passed the CDL skills test but not yet received their CDL to drive a C.R. England truck while a CDL holder is in the truck, but not necessarily in the front seat, effectively allowing a team operation.

The only new entrant drivers that fall under the exemption, England says, are those who have completed all necessary skills tests and written tests and who have a commercial learner’s permit, but simply haven’t been to their home state “to stand in a line at the DMV,” England said, to receive their CDL.
