Flatbed volumes/rates remain well above average, van holding, as midsummer rate doldrums loom
“The fireworks are over,” says DAT’s Ken Harper, but flat and van volumes remain above average for this time of year in the last week. At once, “rates slipped for vans as urgency around the end-of-quarter inventory moves, holiday shipments and Amazon Prime sales” fell off a bit.

Van rates edge up nationally, reefer freight moving out of growing areas to the South
DAT’s Ken Harper notes the freight-volume picture was more or less the same as in March to close out the month. The final week of April, “we had expected a bigger bump with the usual end-of-month inventories being cleared, but the bump didn’t happen,” Harper says.

Hot markets for flat, van, reefer loads in the last week
E-commerce continued to extend the fall freight season, and season-specific freight was on the road in large volumes last week, with Christmas trees, as well as potatoes, cranberries, and other fall produce indicating that grocery stores were still stocking up on fresh food during the week before Thanksgiving. “We expect this week to be quieter, for all the right reasons.”

Midwest writ large is trending up, the Southeast down, with the exception of lanes into Louisiana. Increases were dramatic on lanes into the Shreveport market, which includes Alexandria, La. Ensler Field outside Alexandria is one of the staging areas for FEMA.
