Virginia legislators back off of I-81 tolls – for now
The Virginia House and Senate each submitted substitute bills to replace the bills introduced on Jan. 15. The new bills make no mention of tolling to fund improvements to the interstate, but a committee established by the bills could still choose tolling as the best way to generate funds.

Virginia’s I-81 toll legislation introduced, trucking groups threaten litigation
Identical bills were introduced in the Virginia House and Senate that would establish tolls on I-81. Truckers would pay a maximum of $55.25 to cross the state in one direction, while car drivers would only be charged two-thirds that amount. Car drivers could reduce tolls by purchasing an annual pass.

The I-81 Corridor Improvement Plan submitted to the General Assembly in December by the Commonwealth Transportation Board noted that tolls on heavy commercial vehicles would not exceed 17 cents-per-mile.

Trucker rescues two dogs thrown from moving SUV on I-81 in New York
WICZ-TV in Binghamton reports the trucker saw the dark-colored SUV slow down on I-81 between Marathon and Whitney Point and the dogs being thrown out the window. The trucker, identified only as Adam from Syracuse, stopped and began to help the two injured dogs.

Virginia infrastructure plan could include tolls on I-81
The draft plan includes tolling both passenger cars and commercial trucks in “time of day” tolling that would charge higher rates at peak travel times and lower rates overnight. The study calls for charging commercial trucks 17 cents per mile, which would be $55.25 to cross the entire state across I-81.

TA to close on VA I-81, cutting 129 parking spaces
TravelCenters of America at Virginia’s I-81 Exit 150 will permanently close at 4 p.m. Nov. 15. The stop has 129 parking spaces that will be lost, which likely will add to the already exiting parking problems on I-81.
