New California laws require smog check for trucks, accelerate move away from diesel trucks
Two bills signed into law last week by California Gov. Gavin Newsom will further crack down on heavy-duty diesel trucks in the state. One law establishes “smog checks” for trucks to register and/or operate in the state, while the other is designed to accelerate the move away from diesel-powered trucks to zero emissions vehicles.

CARB to require trucks to store data on emissions, fuel use by 2022
CARB will require year-model 2022 and later engines to collect and store data on NOx output and fuel consumption “that would be used to characterize [carbon dioxide] emissions on all heavy-duty vehicles in use,” CARB says. Data would be retrieved via the engine by plugging in a scanning tool or data reader.

The U.S. EPA on Tuesday announced plans to explore overhauling emissions regulations for heavy-duty trucks and engines, aiming for greater simplicity of emissions regulations and national uniformity of such regs, said EPA Acting Administrator, Andrew Wheeler.

After losing legal appeal, CARB is voiding some compliance alternatives added in 2014
The time has expired for legal appeals to save CARB’s 2014-introduced “compliance alternatives” to the engine upgrades and retrofits required by its in-use diesel regs. Emails attempting to clarify the situation have been going out this month to truck owners with CARB-registered trucks still taking advantage of one or more of those alternatives.
