Volvo’s platooning technology relies on vehicle-to-vehicle communication and advanced driver assist systems (like active braking and advanced cruise control) to enter into a platoon, with the trucks and trailers spaced 1.5 seconds apart — about 120 feet at 60 mph.

Truck platooning developer Peloton adds ELD maker Omnitracs as partner, plans roll out this year
Peloton’s technology synchronizes braking and acceleration between pairs of trucks through vehicle-to-vehicle communications and radar-based collision avoidance systems. As part of the Omnitracs partnership, Peloton will help to roll out automated vehicle technology to fleets using Omnitracs, beginning with two-truck platooning.

NACFE: Truck platooning boosts fuel economy, ‘next logical automation’
In a two-truck platoon, the potential fuel consumption savings versus an isolated single vehicle varies depending on the separation distance of the trucks, but the report says at a following distance of 40- to 50-feet platooning can lead to 4 percent average savings over the two trucks after accounting for traffic, terrain and time when equipped trucks will not be operating in a platoon.
