Turkey

Dear Carolyn,

I’m serving Thanksgiving at my house this year and plan to introduce my new boyfriend to my whole family. The problem, according to my mother and sisters, is that I’m a trucker and he is a pediatrician. Everyone says it won’t work out and he will break my heart. Our hours, schedules, education levels and backgrounds are different.  But we have fun together, he loves my independent, competent nature and says I’m a breath of fresh air compared to the women he has dated in the past.

On Thursday, I plan to tell them all the reasons that my smart, sweet, loving boyfriend is the right guy for me.

Is there anything I can do to stack the deck in my favor?

Kelly

Dear Kelly,

Show them; don’t tell them. Enjoy the food and have fun with your boyfriend. Relax and let the day play out.  I don’t agree that the differences they cite are evidence this won’t work out. Plenty of couples from diverse backgrounds make a go of it. It would be a boring world if we stayed within our own little comfort zones.

Oh and one more thing.  Spike the punch. It may not change their opinions; but hopefully it will help you not care as much. Which is a good thing.

I’m just say’n,

Carolyn
