Today’s Stop: Perrysburg, Ohio

Today, the Overdrive 40th Voice of the American Trucker Tour stops at the TA on Libbey Road in Perrysburg, Ohio, near Toledo.

Perrysburg, Ohio, is the home to the Fort Meigs State Memorial. The site – built in 1813 to defend the Ohio Country against British invasion – constitutes the largest wooden walled fortification in North America. Today the fort stands rebuilt on its original location within a 65 acre wooded park. The 10-acre fort is enclosed by a stockade wall and contains seven blockhouses, five cannon batteries, and numerous interior 8-foot-high earthworks.

Unfortunately, because of construction, the battle reenactment scheduled for this weekend has been canceled.

In Toledo, there are tons of things to see, such as the Toledo Art Museum, Raceway Park, Cedar Point amusement park and the Tigers’ AAA team, the Toledo Mudhens. But one unique attraction is Sauder Village, a historic village where you can go back in time to the 19th century. Depending on the day and season, you can participate in hymn singing or experience demonstrations of old printing techniques, blacksmithing, glass blowing, sheep sheering or harvesting crops.

If you don’t have all day to spend in Sauder Village, you might still want to stop by at the Barn Restaurant for some broasted chicken, glazed ham or roast beef, or stop by the bakery for sweet rolls, cookies or pies, but the Belly Stickers are what’s famous around those parts. The Mennonite women would take their leftover bread and cover it with a cream and sugar mixture. The cream seeps to the bottom, and when the pan is turned over, there is a sticky, sweet topping.
