Of the 72,415 drivers inspected in this year’s Roadcheck inspection spree, 4.8 percent were placed out-of-service, and more than half of those were placed out-of-service due to hours of service or logbook violations.
CVSA says roughly 10,000 inspectors from state, local and federal enforcement agencies will during the 72-hour period be stationed at 1,500 inspection points across the U.S. to do roadside inspections of trucks and buses.
During the 72-hour Roadcheck program, in operation now for more than two decades, a motor carrier is three times more likely than usual to see one of its trucks/drivers inspected in the U.S. and Canada.
FMCSA says it conducted 3.5 million roadside inspections leading to 16,000 estimated prevented crashes. However, crash numbers have steadily risen since 2009, in spite of the efforts of the agency and its CSA program.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and Intermodal Association of North America will demonstrate its paperless Driver Vehicle Examination Report Notification Service Nov. 18 at the Intermodal Expo next week in Houston, Texas.
Of the 20,067 commercial vehicles inspected in the September-held Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's Brake Safety Week, 2,714 were placed out of service to produce a 13.5 percent out-of-service rate.
