The ‘Time Bandit’ electric cargo-strap roller

Sometime flatbedder and former small fleet owner Johnny White finds inspiration in day-to-day problems -- that might not be the best way, however, to describe the occasion that spurred him on to his latest solution, the new TimeBandit electric cargo-strap winder (pictured). As he tells it, "I was up in St. Cloud, Minn., when it was minus 6 degrees," delivering a flatbed load of HVAC units to a Home Depot in the middle of a snow ...

Midnight Cowboy Bill Mack back in the saddle

If you haven't heard, the trucking radio giant is back on overnight radio via Willie's Roadhouse on SiriusXM Channel 56, broadcasting Sunday through Friday in the midnight-3 a.m. Eastern time slot. A couple of years back, Overdrive Editorial Director Max Heine interviewed Mack leading into Overdrive's 50th anniversary coverage. Check out the two vids below, a small portion of that interview, with Mack telling the story in the first of a reptilian "gift" some haulers brought ...

Highway bill highlight reel

The American Trucking Associations' summary of new highway bill items that are of interest to motor carriers, sent out to various media, follows -- I've rearranged a few items of driver/owner-operator interest to bring them closer to the top. Bug-removal tip: Scotch Brite ‘Dobie’ pads

This one comes by way of owner-operator Henry Albert's blog, where he shares an anecdote about the Scotch Brite "Dobie" cleaning pads (pictured) he uses to clean bugs from his windshield -- and how he somewhat inadvertently passed the trick off to Daimler engineers at the Uvalde, Texas, proving grounds. Give it a read here. As for getting the bugs off, he writes: 1. Spray a little window cleaner on the pad itself. 2. Rub down the entire ...

Irish truckers report on South Korean truckers’ strike

An estimated 80 percent of the 380,000 total South Korean truckers were reported to have gone on strike "demanding the introduction of standard freight charges, a 30 percent rise in transportation fees and revised laws on labour rights," reported the (you're hearing right) Irish Trucker Magazine. News travels faster than on-highway rigs, eh? Platts reports the truckers are striking over high fuel prices, demanding further government subsidies. According to the Korea Herald, the stoppage comes on ...

MADSEN: With more value-added services on trucks, driver value declines

If you missed this post to Phil Madsen's Learning Something New Every Day blog, from earlier in the month, give it a gander soon as you can. It's a must-read for the quality of analysis it gives to the expediting owner-operator's first experience with software that can, with an operator's permission, track his cell phone in lieu of utilizing an expensive on-board load tracker. Madsen -- rightly, in this case, we think -- refused to cooperate, ...

Have you seen this custom truck lately?

A look back here a few years to the Custom Rigs magazine vid of Doug Fisher's The Gambler 2007 Peterbilt 379 Legacy edition, which among other features sports of an actual shotgun as the shifter and a signature by none other than the original Gambler himself, Kenny Rogers. A commenter on the vid at our YouTube channel recalled seeing the truck up in Manitoba some time back, and dropped this interesting tidbit: "It was being sold ...
