U.S. truck tonnage increases in December

U.S. truck tonnage as calculated by the American Trucking Associations jumped 6.6 percent in December over the same month in 2008, the first year-over-year increase in 15 months, ATA said Jan. 25. ATA’s seasonally adjusted for-hire truck tonnage index increased 2.1 percent in December from November after a 2.6 percent decrease from October to November.

A law firm is seeking class action status in its suit against Swift Transportation and Interstate Equipment Leasing it charges wrongly classified truckers as owner-operators instead of employees. The U.S Department of Transportation Jan. 26 announced it is immediately prohibiting truck and bus drivers from sending text messages while operating commercial vehicles. Truck and bus drivers who text while driving commercial vehicles may be subject to civil or criminal penalties of up to $2,750.
