Kim and Tom Turner’s Peterbilt is leased to Southern Pride.
With temperatures on the Sacramento 49er Travel Plaza blacktop soaring above 110 degrees, contestants in the 24th annual Shell Rotella T SuperRigs contest had more to worry about than polishing their rigs.
Tom and Kim Turner, whose tan and gold 1995 Peterbilt 379 won Best of Show at the 2005 SuperRigs as well as Best of Show Combination at the 2005 Overdrive Pride & Polish, measured temperatures nearing 120 degrees as they polished their rig. “We were up here two weeks ago and it was 70 degrees,” Kim said. “It’s not supposed to be this hot.”
In the midst of polishing, Tom was overcome by the heat and forced into the comfort of his air-conditioned sleeper. But beating the heat was worth it for the duo from Cynthiana, Ky., who are leased to Southern Pride: Their truck, El Dorado, was Best of Show again.
The contest also featured first-time winners such as Mike Maggini, whose 1998 Peterbilt 379 daycab hauls hay to and from muddy pastures but looks to be showroom quality. “We definitely get off the road,” said Maggini, who carries a photo album with images of the truck stuck in the mud or being pulled from farm fields.
