Truck Christmas parades upcoming in U.S., Canada

The next two weekends, trucks – not Santa – star in several U.S. and Canadian holiday parades.

The 20th annual Christmas Convoy Truckers Parade is set for 6 p.m. on Dec. 11 in Eureka, Calif. In previous years, 50 to 100 trucks have paraded with toppings that included bandstand platforms, dancing reindeer and flying fish. Some trucks have required three generators to power more than 40,000 decorative lights, according to information from the Humboldt County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

In 1993, D.R. Johnson Lumber Co., now located in Riddle, Ore., started the annual Timber Truckers Light Parade, scheduled this year for 6 p.m. on Dec. 11. The Riddle parades have had as many as 70 trucks, with a single truck boasting up to 50,000 lights, according to the Myrtle Creek-Tri City Area Chamber of Commerce. Drivers, who toss candy and trinkets to spectators, compete for prizes and awards.

Last year, more than 50 decorated trucks raised $14,500 for charities to benefit Thunder Bay, Ontario children. This year, Thunder Bay’s 12th Annual Parade of Lights for Children kicks off at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4.

Here are a few other truck-themed Christmas parades:

  • In Stevenson, Wash., bagpipers will lead lighted trucks in the Starlight Truck Parade at 7 p.m.  Dec. 3.
  • Filling holiday food pantries is the goal of the Paradise Ridge Christmas Truck Parade (located in Paradise Ridge, Calif.) set for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4.
  • The Island Equipment Owners Association is helping gather food for the needy in the Lighted Truck Parade and Food Drive in Victoria, British Columbia. The parade starts at 5:45 p.m. Dec. 4.
  • The Truckers Light Parade in La Pine, Ore., is at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4.
  • Bring food or a toy to donate at the Lighted Truck Parade, 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5, in Cloverdale, British Columbia.
