Truckers for Troops program raises $71,000

The fourth annual Truckers for Troops campaign by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association surpassed last year’s amount raised with more than $71,000 going to care packages for military personnel stationed in combat areas overseas.

“Our members have really come through this year and we couldn’t be more amazed at their generosity,” says Norita Taylor, media spokesperson. Packages typically include personal care items like wipes, socks and lotions, as well as snacks and books.

“Truckers for Troops” ran Dec. 6-10, aided by a donation from Shell Rotella for $5,000. The combined effort raised $71,261.84 – all of which will go toward the care packages. OOIDA members and supporters have contributed nearly $230,000 over the four Truckers for Troops campaigns.

Hand-made cards and/or letters can be sent until Jan. 7, 2011. The first care package shipment is anticipated to go out in late January.
