Trucking continues coming to Joplin aid

The stories about relief efforts in Joplin keep coming in. Before I get to a couple more, I thought I’d take a moment to note that I will be out of the office through June 7, though Channel 19 will continue to bring all manner of side routes and byways into the industry in my time away. Definitely keep ears on Monday for an awesome Memorial Day dispatch by Overdrive managing editor Lucinda Coulter. (If you’ve as yet missed Overdrive‘s John Baxter’s remembrance of his Vietnam service, where he acquired his “lifelong love of trucks and respect for truck drivers,” on Overdrive Retroread it here.)

And for more about donating/contributing to the Joplin relief effort, see my previous post (note list in the comments section.

The Transalive AmCoach has been dispatched to Joplin, Mo., as a Disaster Relief Unit for the truckers working recovery and debris removal, says TransAlive’s Bob Hataway. The Coach has supported haulers at disaster situations from 9/11 in New York to Katrina. In Joplin, Hataway adds, the coach will serve as a command center. Find more information about how to help financially at the TransAlive website for the AmCoach. Or contact Hataway by email for donating services and/or products. The on-site cell phone is (817) 320-0567. The TransAlive WATS line, (800) USA-HURT, is piggy-backed to the on-site cell phone.

Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores announced it will donate $150,000 to local chapters of the United Way to help Joplin, Mo., and communities throughout Oklahoma recover and rebuild. The company will assist with the immediate need in Joplin after being hit with one of the deadliest storms in history. Love’s home state of Oklahoma was also recently hit with tornadoes, causing damage throughout the state and in several communities Love’s serves.

“Our hearts go out to those who were affected by these tornadoes. Love’s has been impacted by tornadoes in our history, so we know what it’s like to rebuild,” said Tom Love, Chairman and CEO. “We are fortunate to be able to make this contribution. I am proud of our employees who stepped up during this time of disaster and helped people in great need.”

The Love’s located in Joplin remained open during the storms. The store donated batteries and flashlights to a local hospital that was directly hit by a tornado. They also donated water to a community shelter.

Love’s donation will be directed toward two United Way agencies: Heart of Missouri United Way will receive $100,000. United Way of Central Oklahoma will receive $50,000.
