Thursday morning, May 2, an email arrived in the inboxes of ten women truckers informing them they’d been selected as the 10 finalists inOverdrive’s Most Beautiful.

They were pared down by a month-long voting period, in which Overdrive readers could cast votes each day for five of the 71 applicants to the contest. Voting concluded April 30, with nearly 12,000 votes narrowing the field to ten trucking ladies.

The 71 original applicants represented a wide range of ages and body types, company drivers and owner-operators and experience in trucking. What they had in common was a gutsy sense of self-confidence, inner and exterior beauty and a love of all things trucking.

The stories that accompanied the photos told tales of extreme hardship overcome by courage and relentless hard work. Many said they had never considered themselves “beautiful” but wanted to join in the fun. Nearly half were nominated by family members, children, husbands and bosses who described their nominee as beautiful, smart, joyful and a truly positive image for the trucking industry.

The program generated excitement from the beginning as the contestants pulled in their friends, family and social network to cast their votes every day.  Many of the women began to encourage their fellow contestants by posting their photo and application on their Facebook page and asking their followers to vote.

Analytics showed that a huge majority of readers not only viewed the photos but also took the time to open the stories and spend time on the site reading through multiple submissions.

Over the next few weeks the top ten women will be interviewed for a more in-depth look at their lives on the road. By mid-month, all the interviews and new photos will be posted and the voting will open back up June 1. In July, the field will narrow to the top 3 based on the popular vote and by a majority decision from a selection committee. These lucky ladies will go to The Great American Trucking Show in Dallas, Texas, where they will receive a make-over and participate in a professional photography session. They will pose next to the Pride & Polish winners and the grand prizewinner will be featured on the cover of Overdrive magazine.
