You know what it’s like to be reviled by four-wheelers. Snubbed by dispatchers. Ignored by shippers and receivers. So it’s nice when someone shows a little appreciation. Or a lot of appreciation, as is the case this summer.
The most widespread acknowledgment of truckers is at hand with National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, Aug. 25 to Sept. 1. Promoted by the American Trucking Associations, this week brings together many elements of the industry to honor safe, professional truckers. That celebration begins Aug. 22-25 in Minneapolis, with ATA’s 2001 National Truck Driving Championships.
Another major trucker recognition gets under way this month with nominations for the Independent Contractor of the Year. Many sponsors give cash and prizes to the winner of this competition, which is sponsored by the Truckload Carriers Association and Overdrive. Four other owner-operators will receive a generous package of prizes, too.
These are no “lucky winners.” TCA screens hundreds of applications, judging the contestants’ ability to run a successful truckload business, operate safely and represent the industry well. Those who make it to the top have paid their dues. If you know of a worthy contestant, use the form on Page 86 to make a nomination.
Overdrive does its part to recognize truckers throughout the year with its Trucker of the Month feature. From those 12 honorees, our judges select a Trucker of the Year, who receives several prizes and trips.
And by the time you read this, Overdrive will have kicked off its cross-country 40th Anniversary Voice of the American Trucker Tour. Our traveling exhibit will be on display at Petro and TravelCenters of America truck stops, with giveaways at each location and at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas.
