Western Star 4700 SF to premier in test drive challenge

Western Star’s new 4700SF dump truck, equipped with a 450-hp Detroit Diesel DD13 and Allison 4500 RDS transmission, will make its debut in the Serious Trucks Challenge in January at the World of Concrete 2012, said the Fort Mill, S.C.-based truck maker and contest host.

The test drive challenge will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 24 – 26 in the Silver Lot outside the Los Vegas Convention Center, the conference site.

Competitors will be tested on simulated construction tasks such as parallel parking, s-curves, driver side parking, blind side parking and backing up and stopping on a 42-foot long, steeply graded ramp. CDL holders are eligible to participate and can register on site during show hours.

The 4700SF is 110 inches from the bumper to the back of the cab and is “ideal for the dump, mixer, crane and roll-off applications, Western Star Marketing Director Ann Demitruk said.

A 4800SF dump with an Allison 3000 RDS and a 4900SF mixer with an Allison 4700 RDS featuring second reverse will be available for the challenge also. The truck maker’s 6900XD 40-ton dump and a twin-steer chassis are scheduled to be on display.
