‘Where’s the love’ for truckers? Dr. Love has the answer

Or at least he knows where it’s not: I-55 South into Hammond, La., from the No. 46 milemarker about 15 miles to I-12 (much smoother). Dr. Love, or truck driver B.G. Love, takes online viewers on a tour down this road in a video posted in June to the blog for his “Lovology” project, a personal philosophical journey the driver and thinker has been documenting online since April 1, 2010.

In the video, he tries to make clear the toll bad interstate highways can take on a big-truck driver’s body by simply filming himself and vehicle bouncing and bumping as his truck rolls over the rough 15-mile stretch.

“The bad roads tear us up,” he says in the vid, making “our health bad, our vehicles bad, and the freight we’re carrying — they make the freight bad. I just want you to see how rough it can be.”

Truck technology can only do so much to mitigate the health/stress impacts of bad highways, Love says. “Thanks to the nice new trucks they’re building these days, they’re handling the bad roads pretty well,” taking shock off of the human body. But, he adds, “I don’t think we should have to suffer like we do.”

Louisiana held top ranks for the worst highways in the nation in Overdrive’s last several Highway Report Card surveys.

Love himself appeared in a past issue of Overdrive, in April 1993.
