According to a report from the Buffalo News, 24-year-old driver Kirisanthan Senathi struck the bridge, causing “substantial damage” to his truck. Senathi reportedly told police it was “his first day on the job.”
No one was injured in the accident, but Senathi was ticketed for hitting the bridge, the report states.
It is unclear if the young trucker was following GPS directions, but the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued an alert Wednesday, May 31, warning truck drivers to use professional-grade navigation systems that provide route restrictions, such as low bridge overpasses.
FMCSA also says to update GPS software often to make sure the maps are up-to-date. The agency has also published tips for drivers using GPS navigation.
