ATBS President Todd Amen, who spoke in an hour-long Partners in Business seminar Friday at the Great American Trucking Show, said he expects owner-operator income to continue to grow this year compared to 2017 earnings.

The annual conference call hosted by the business services firm ATBS providing bechmarking analysis for owner-operators based on income data mined among its leased and independent owner-operator clients was originally set for March 14, last week. Severe weather in Colorado last week intervened, throwing a wrench into the call’s coordination. The new date for it, ATBS notes, is this Wednesday, March 20, at noon EDT and 9 a.m. Pacific. Whether ATBS clients or not, owner-operators are encouraged to attend and can register to participate via this link.

Based on the data collected last year, the average owner-operator annual net income in 2018 exceeded $65,000 which is an 8.6 percent increase over 2017. Furthermore, 15 percent of ATBS clients earned an average annual net income of more than $100,000.

“It was a record year in many areas and a great year to be an owner-operator,” says Todd Amen, President and CEO of ATBS. The firm’s annual benchmarking study provides income averages for a variety of segments and other analysis, against which owner-operators can analyze their own performance.

During the call, Amen will also provide insight on the analysis, which includes averages for miles driven, net income, fuel mileage and freight rates. The following questions stand to figure prominently in the talk, ATBS says:

  • How much did the owner-operator population grow in 2018?
  • What was the bottom-line impact of electronic logging devices on owner-operator miles, rates, and fuel economy?
  • Why have spot market rates dropped so much and what does this mean for owner-operators?
  • What is the outlook for 2019 for owner-operators?
