In the Minimizer Bandit Big Rig Series‘ first race outside the Southeast at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, last weekend, Tommy Boileau grabbed his first truck racing win, as well as the first oval track win of his racing career. Boileau has been racing go-karts, sports cars and Formula 4 cars on road courses before jumping into trucks on oval tracks this year.

“88 Mike” Morgan appeared to be headed to his third consecutive win until he crashes with three laps to go trying to get around lapped traffic. Morgan took the lead from Justin Ball with just over 10 laps to go and extended that lead as the laps ticked down.

For his win, Tommy Boileau took home a $10,000 check. For his win, Tommy Boileau took home a $10,000 check.

With three laps to go, as he was attempting to pass two lapped trucks, Morgan’s front fender got caught in the rear fender of Trevor Kruckeberg, sending both trucks into the foam-padded outside wall. Ricky “Rude” Proffitt, who had been battling for second place with Ball, took some damage to his left rear fender in the aftermath of the crash, which caused excess wear on a tire.

Proffitt restarted in the lead, but the damage to his tire wouldn’t let him get up to speed, and Boileau took advantage, powering his truck to victory lane. As a result of the crash, Morgan had to restart with three laps to go at the back of the 13-truck pack, but he was able to work his way back up to third place by the time the checkered flag flew.

The Bandits return to the Midwest later this month at Madison International Speedway in Madison, Wis., for the first and only Friday night race of the season on July 28.
