Diesel price reverses course, heads up

Dscn0884 OdAfter declining eight weeks in the previous nine weeks, the national average retail price of diesel rose the week ended July 11, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration. The national average price increased 4.9 cents to $3.899.

Before this week’s increase, the national average price had fallen 27.4 cents since May 2.

Average prices in all regions but one declined in the latest week. The biggest gain of 6 cents to $3.872 was in the Lower Atlantic region. The East Coast as a whole rose 5.6 cents to $3.926. The Gulf Coast increased 5.8 cents to $3.856, while the Midwest jumped 5.7 cents to $3.875. Increases pushed Central Atlantic and West Coast averages above $4 a gallon.

The national average price is 99.6 cents higher than a year ago. The record diesel price was $4.764 in July 2008.
