A tractor-trailer driver who lost control of his truck while crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and plunged into the water is recovering, according to a news report from Hampton Roads, Va. TV station WAVY-TV.

The driver of the truck was identified as 33-year-old Matthew Killmon, of Wachapreague, Va. According to the WAVY report, the accident happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday when Killmon attempted to pass a slower tractor trailer and lost control of his truck, crashing into the side of the bridge and going over the side.

CBBT crews, Virginia Beach emergency responders and the Coast Guard assisted Killmon, who was conscious and alert in the 49-degree water, until he was pulled out of the water by the Virginia Beach Marine Patrol at 3:55 p.m., the news report states.

Once pulled out of the water, Killmon was flown to a Norfolk, Va. hospital, where he was treated for “serious but non-life threatening injuries to his head, arms and chest”.
