The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics on Oct. 8 released a technical report, Factors Involved in Fatal Vehicle Crashes, examining the numerous factors that contribute to the severity of fatal motor vehicle crashes.
Analysis of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System database shows single-vehicle crash fatalities are the most prevalent.
The main factors for single-vehicle fatal crashes are whether traffic controls are working, and the first harmful event in a crash (e.g., rollover, traffic barrier or ditch).
For two-vehicle fatal crashes, the primary factors are traffic controls and the characteristics of the roadway (e.g., roadway alignment or surface type).
For multivehicle (three or more) crashes, road characteristics, vehicle speed and road type (e.g., interstate or country road) are most critical.

Affected trucks include model year 2008-2018 Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star 4700, 4900, 5700 and 6900 trucks. DTNA says after hard brake applications, the brake light pressure switch may not activate the brake lights with the light application of the brake pedal.
