Highway 99 in Seattle set to close for 9 days

Truckers using the Highway 99 corridor on the westside of Seattle will have to find alternate routes during a nine-day period beginning Oct. 21 when the state Department of Transportation demolishes the southern section of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.

Heavier than normal traffic is forecast for I-5 through Seattle and I-405 east of Seattle during the shutdown.

Highway 99 will close at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 until 5 a.m. on Oct. 31. The northbound segment from the West Seattle Bridge to near the Port of Seattle will be closed the entire period, while northbound from Safeco Field to Battery Street Tunnel will be open weekdays and weekends for sports events at CenturyLink Field. Southbound 99 from the Battery Street Tunnel to the West Seattle Bridge will be closed the entire time.

Workers will create a four-lane detour that will be used until a new stadium-area interchange is built.

The entire viaduct eventually will be torn down and replaced with a tunnel.
