Major owner-operator carrier reports record income

Landstar System, reported record net income for a second quarter, $35.9 million. That compared to $29.6 million for the 2011 second quarter. That’s good news for independent contractors, considering Landstar is the nation’s largest owner-operator carrier.

The increase in rates on a quarter-over-prior-year-quarter basis has moderated to some degree, but still remains high in relation to historical amounts, said Henry Gerkens, chairman, president and chief executive officer of the Jacksonville, Fla.-based company.

“Available truck capacity in the flatbed/unsided trailing equipment market continued to lag demand, and available truck capacity in the van arena was in line with demand,” he said.
