Fuel Costs. Want a sure-fire way to put more money in your pocket by controlling your fuel expenses? First, slow down — for every mile per hour you drive over 60, you reduce your fuel economy by one-tenth of a gallon per mile. Second, keep your rig in top running order. Preventative maintenance can hurt your fuel efficiency. Third, stick to your routes. Most owner-operators log 6 to 12 percent of annual miles that are unnecessary.
