Recent heavy rains in Southern California have caused mudslides and flooding, resulting in some major highway closures in the region.
According to the California Department of Transportation, the areas primarily impacted are in Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties in the vicinity of December’s fires.
The latest update from Caltrans notes the following closures:
- U.S. 101 from State Route 150 near the Ventura/Santa Barbara County line to Milpas Street in Santa Barbara.
- State Route 33 approximately three miles north of Ojal
- State Route 150 to State Route 192
- State Route 27 from State Route 1 to Grand View Drive in Topanga
- State Route 2 east of State Route 39 through Wrightwood
- I-210 Eastbound on the La Tuna Canyon Road off-ramp
Caltrans in Santa Barbara estimates U.S. 101 will remain closed until Thursday night, Jan. 11. Drivers are encouraged to take Highway 5 as a detour.
The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office has confirmed at least 15 fatalities from the storm as of Wednesday morning.
